NLRB General Counsel Urges New Rules for Union Payments

Unions should have to tell new employees in workplaces where nonmember fees are charged the difference between those fees and what they would pay in dues as full members, the National Labor Relations Board’s top lawyer said.

NLRB General Counsel Peter Robb said he would urge the board to overturn a 2014 ruling that reaffirmed that unions don’t have to disclose specific amounts for nonmember fees—which cover the costs of collective bargaining and other nonpolitical activities—until a worker decides not to join the union and then objects to paying the fees.
