Non-tenure-track faculty members at Santa Clara University voted to form a union affiliated with Service Employees International Union, the National Labor Relations Board confirmed in a vote tally. The vote was 245 for and 93 against unionization, with the new union totaling 544 instructors. The university said in a statement that it “remains committed to building a world-class university where all colleagues can build meaningful careers and share in our Jesuit mission.”

Lisa A. Kloppenberg, acting president, said in an earlier statement that “our community needs more collaboration and understanding, not division. The unionization of a portion of our faculty has the potential to create a deeper ‘us vs. them’ dynamic that detracts—not adds—to our culture and our mission.” Ultimately, however, Kloppenberg said, “the decision is up to the proposed bargaining unit.”
